Carrie's prom band, Vance or Towers!

Old share, brand new (and improved!) 320 rip!

If you’d been in the gymnasium of the Bates High School on that tragic night in 1976 when Carrie White slaughtered the majority of her classmates, chances are you’d have heard many of the songs on this album performed live... ya know, before you died. The third most frequently asked question about the original CARRIE (following “Was Miss Collins really laughing?” and “Were Sue and Tommy in on the prank?” – the answer to both questions is a resounding “No!”) is “What was the song that plays at the beginning of the prom scene? The answer is “Education Blues” by Vance or Towers, the band that was on stage for most of the prom (and featured in the original trailer).

The idea behind the name of the band was that female fans could pick their favorite – Glen Vance OR Michael Towers. The duo released this album in 75, appeared at the prom in 76… and one has to wonder if they didn’t make it out of the massacre because they promptly fell off the face of the earth. If anyone knows what ever happened to them, please let me know (Towers wrote the lyrics for the title tune for the flick "Looker" and he co-wrote the theme for the '80s series "Simon & Simon" but I dunno what's become of him since). Also, there’s some demos that the guys handed out to their friends back in the day. This is one of my very favorite obscure '70s bands and I’d LOVE to hear those demos, if someone's still got their tape….

As mentioned above, I first shared this album in 2006. Unfortunately, the record player I had at the time had a slight hum, and I wasn't yet adept to cleaning up vinyl. Matter of fact, even the original scans of the covers looked bad. It's occasionally evident that it's from vinyl but this new rip is vastly superior to the original share, which wound up on some other sites too. Also included are new scans of the covers, as well as the lyric sheet.

The Mouseketeer Cookie Book!

I think part of the appeal of my site (as well as the thing that's kept me from getting bored and abandoning this blog) is that there's a certain wtf? factor -- you never can tell exactly what I'm gonna post. There's been movies, TV shows, CDs, LPs, books, magazines, comics, cereal and happy meal boxes... and now recipes!? Yep. I acquired a monstrous box of recipes that dates back decades. Most of what was in the box was trash -- clippings and torn out pages from a wide array of publications, many of which had gotten wet at some point and were covered with mildew. After sifting through it, the vast majority of the contents of the box went right in the recycling bin. But included were a few nuggets of gold, such as today's share...

This is a four page spread from the 1989 issue of Ladies' Home Journal featuring the cast of the gaudy, Dayglo neon-colored "New Mickey Mouse Club!" Okay, so none of the original cast members are famous (Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Ryan Gosling and Keri Russell didn't join the cast until later) but it's still kind of a cool piece of ephemera for all of the kids of the late '80s and early '90s who frequent my blog...

Sheena: Queen of the Jungle

Released in 1984, "Sheena: Queen of the Jungle" was an epic bomb featuring Tanya Roberts as the female counterpart of Tarzan. Anyone who's familiar with Roberts in roles ranging from the R-rated remake of the X-rated Harry Reems shocker "Forced Entry" to being a replacement on "Charlie's Angels" to victim of a demented killer "Tourist Trap" to being Donna's mom on "That '70s Show" knows that, God love her, Tanya Roberts simply can't act. She's not even convincing in those annoying Las Vegas commercials she's done in recent years. Thankfully the role of Sheena demanded only that she look good in a makeshift leather bikini (and less), so it was the one role that Roberts was perfectly suited for. And it's obvious that she got the part as a result of her appearance in the original "Beastmaster," which was essentially the same role, just with less screen time (but almost equal nudity).

Shot on location in Kenya, the visuals are breathtaking and still hold up today. I wish I could say the same for the rest of the film -- though Richard Hartley composed a nice score. The dialogue is preposterous, the pacing is off (clocking in right under two hours, the movie feels endless), there's not enough story to sustain an entire feature (yet somehow they managed to drag it out for two hours) and -- again -- Tanya Roberts can't act. But for that matter, Ted Wass's entire acting career was comprised of bad choices. The movie definitely falls into the "guilty pleasure" category... if you're guilty enough to derive much pleasure out of it.

So today I've got the comic book adaptation for your downloading enjoyment. And since I anticipate people are gonna ask for the long out of print soundtrack, it's already available for download all over blogland!

Happy VD!

Heyyyyy kids, what day is it? Yep, it's that day created by the greeting card companies to make single people feel worthless, to make couples feel inadequate, and to make children bug their parents to buy overpriced greeting cards plastered with pictures of cartoon characters to give to every kid they know. What a stupid holiday... yet somehow it's only second to Christmas. Go figure.

A Valentine Message from KY Jelly!!!

It's become a standing tradition that I share something off-kilter (and generally perverse -- see video above) on Valentine's Day. This year I decided at the last minute to throw together another compilation. I thought about going the sappy love song route. Too droll. I thought about going the pervert sex-song route. A whole compilation of that would've been overkill. I thought about going the "Hit the Road, Jack," "get the hell out of my life" route. Not quite right for Valentine's Day. I thought about going the "looking for love" route. Meh. So instead I compromised by including all of these types of songs! Whether you're happily (or unhappily) committed, single, horny, a misunderstood witch who keeps a secret lover inside your radio, simply insane or if you're in love with a gay guy or an ostrich(?!), you should be able to find something personally relevant in this collection of infectiously catchy songs!

The VD Compilation

01. The Great Pretender (rock version) - Freddie Mercury
02. King and Queen of Hearts (1982 version) - David Pomeranz
from Zapped!
03. Angie Baby - Helen Reddy
04. Adaptable (Anything for You) - Alice Cooper
05. 3.14 - The Bloodhound Gang
06. Yer So Bad - Tom Petty
07. Vitamin L. - Mary Kay Place
from Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman
08. Goodbye, Stupid
from Colma the Musical
09. The Uno Song - Self
10. Please Don't Be Gay - Sharron Alexis
from Sordid Lives (the movie)
11. Crazy Love - Adam Sandler & Lisa Mordente
12. Potential New Boyfriend - Dolly Parton
13. Zero Hero - Jaye Barnes Luckett

Puff the Magic Dragon lived by the sea....

Switching gears (but not time-frames), here's an adaptation of the popular 1978 TV special "Puff the Magic Dragon." Based on the song by Peter Yarrow and Leonard Lipton which was popularized by Yarrow's folk trio Peter, Paul and Mary, Burgess Meredith ("Batman," "Rocky") lent his distinctive voice to the title character and the special was nominated for an Emmy Award. "Puff the Magic Dragon" spawned two more TV specials ("Puff in the Land of Living Lies" and "Puff and the Incredible Mr. Nobody") which aired frequently on television over the next two decades before fading into oblivion. All three specials are currently available on a single DVD. Get your copy before the disc goes out of print... cuz it doesn't seem they're coming back to TV any time soon.

The song/special tells the story of Jackie Paper (aka Jackie Draper in the cartoon), a little boy who eventually has to grow up and leave his (presumably) imaginary friend, Puff the magic dragon, behind. Because of the names Jackie Paper and Puff, it's long been rumored that the song is actually a thinly-veiled reference to marijuana (Sid & Marty Krofft, who openly admit to loosely basing their H.R. Pufnstuf character on the song, endured similar scrutiny). It probably doesn't help matters that the cartoon has it's surreal and trippy moments -- but realistically, most everything aimed at kids in the '70s was trippy. I mean, it's funny how no one ever accused the teacher on "Mission: Magic!" of slipping the kids LSD so they'd see Rick Springfield every week. But I suppose that's a rant for another post...

Back to the book, it was written by Romeo Muller, who not only wrote all three Puff specials, but also a ton of other classic TV specials, mostly for Rankin-Bass ("Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," "Frosty the Snowman," "The Hobbit," "Return of the King," etc.) as well as the campy, once-aired TV adaptation of the infamous Broadway flop "It's a Bird... It's a Plane... It's Superman!" (perhaps rightfully obscure, but a personal favorite).

This is a combo of scans from two different variations of the same book (the larger Avon Camelot edition and the subsequent, smaller Weekly Reader edition) -- probably not too noticeable, but both copies have anomalies so I tried to get the best of each. In addition to the story, the book also includes the words and music for "The Boat Song" and "Weave Me the Sunshine." Strangely, they didn't include the title song... so as usual, Vinnie's set out to rectify that. At the end of the book, you'll also find scans of several different variations of the sheet music for "Puff the Magic Dragon," both for guitar and piano. Cuz I'm just that obsessive.

Indiana Jones: A Tale of High Adventure

Okay, one last "Indiana Jones" share (for the time being, anyway...). Here's "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom: A Tale of High Adventure," a storybook tie-in from the second film. What makes this of particular interest is that three scenes are included which were presumably filmed but removed prior to the final cut. Sure, the extra entree at dinner isn't a necessity and the film probably works better without Willie's brief escape from the nefarious thugees, but it was foolish that they cut the scene which explained how Short Round figured out how to awaken Indy from the black sleep. Almost as foolish as not including deleted scenes, vintage making-of specials or any other noteworthy extras on the DVDs. Sorry, the lack of extras bothers me almost as much as the insects bothered Willie. Well, maybe not quite that much. I mean, I didn't shriek in horror or anything.

I recently went on a "babes in bikinis" rant, but this most definitely wasn't what I had in mind -- some people should not be allowed to be this naked in public. I always thought of Harrison Ford as a masculine guy, but in this pic even the beard and chest hair doesn't make him look much more masculine than Tula. Well, I guess he has a bump in his trunks, but still... Google image search brings back some frightening things sometimes!

Indiana Jones Adaptations!

Sorry to psych-out the many of you who clicked the Indiana Jones label on the Making-of the Temple of Doom book I shared yesterday, but there's generally a method to my madness. Today I've got the comic book adaptations of all four Indiana Jones flicks for your downloading pleasure! Yes, even Kingdom of the Crystal Skull....

I will admit the last film drastically pales in comparison to the original trilogy, but it's still vastly superior to the rest of the crap coming out of Hollywood these days. And, you know, it makes Temple of Doom (my favorite, but frequently cited as the worst of the original trilogy) look like a true masterpiece by comparison. There have been rumblings lately that "Indiana Jones 5" is in the works (more info and gossip at The Raider.net) and I'm up for it, even if it is akin to "Crystal Skull." Beats the shit out of the latest remake of... (insert the title of any beloved 20+ year old movie here -- chances are it's about to be rebooted... if it hasn't been already).

Anywho, also included below is Issue #1 of the Indiana Jones "Official Magazine," which I missed out on altogether -- are there more issues floating around cyberspace? I can't take credit for scanning any of these shares (I've got the two Marvel Super Specials, but the scans I got from the oft-mentioned big M.S.S. torrent are good) so thanks Octon, Zone, Resin and the other awesome folks who originally scanned and generously uploaded them!

And for my bilingual visitors, here's a magazine that seems to follow the saga from Raiders to Crystal Skull, stopping everywhere in between from Young Indiana Jones to the Lego game. There's lots of great pics, but I really can't tell you much else about this publication, as the site where it originated seems to be gone and I only have a very minimal understanding of Spanish...

This single panel article from a 2003 issue of "Hot Dog" magazine mentions an entirely different McGuffin for Indy IV than the Crystal Skull that was ultimately used... but I suppose they couldn't figure out a way to tie that McGuffin to a Close Encounters homage. Here's hoping they backtrack and finally use it for Indy V.

Yesterday I admitted to being a dork (much like the lazing dudes pictured above). Want proof? I've got Raiders of the Lost Ark and Temple of Doom on Beta!!

And what's more, I even have a working Beta player! Nothing compares to watching a fuzzy full-screen movie! Admit it, you're jealous.

As if anyone actually required proof that I'm a dork.... particularly in a post that's filled with comic book adaptations of a culty George Lucas/Steven Spielberg adventure franchise with sci-fi elements.

The Making-Of Temple of Doom!

I openly admit that I'm a dork. You're digging around my site, so chances are you're a dork too. But in the '80s, Spielberg and Lucas showed us dorks can be cool with their Indiana Jones franchise! Originally the part of Dr. Jones was given to Tom Selleck, but commitments to his series "Magnum P.I." forced him to back out and the role went to Harrison Ford, who became truly iconic in the brown fedora. Meanwhile, Selleck's only big-screen franchise would be "3 Men and a Baby." Yikes. At least TV's been good to him.

A deleted scene in which the palace guests are served roast boar

In the grand tradition of The Gremlins Souvenir Magazine and The Goonies Souvenir Magazine, here's a softcover book that chronicles the making of Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom! Unlike the aforementioned magazines, there's no scene by scene photo pictorial and it's not particularly dumbed-down (like The Garbage Pail Kids Movie Magazine). Instead, there's a wealth of information on specific subjects (locations, costume design, storyboards, special effects, elephants!, etc.). Wanna know why Short Round wore a baseball cap? How about finding out what was used for the chilled monkeys brains? Perhaps you'd like to know how they made the stones burn through the bag. The answers to all of this and much more is included in this nifty photo and interview-filled book, which oddly has no distinguishing title (the title of the book is the same as the film and no author is cited).

Labyrinth: The Photo Album

Yep, I'm retreading familiar (and popular) ground with another share from the 1986 fantasy... "Labyrinth: The Photo Album" by Rebecca Grand has a tendency to fetch high prices on online auctions and resale sites (it used to regularly exceed $100 on eBay), so I've coveted this book since I stumbled on a copy it in the late '90s -- and I've resisted the urge to scan and share it until now because I didn't want to wreck it....

What I didn't realize until I was halfway done scanning it, however, is that the previous owner meticulously tore out three pages. The title page, one from "As the World Falls Down" and another from "Within You" are all missing, so I can only presume these pages featured full-page photos of David Bowie that wound up hanging on some teenage girl's wall. How thoroughly annoying. Since it took me more than a decade to notice these pages were missing, I think that goes to show they're not entirely necessary -- if I hadn't pointed it out, you probably wouldn't notice unless you were checking the page count. The book is a photo pictorial with minimal narration (by Goblins!) and tons and tons of photos from the film. So without further ado...
