CineMagic

Just to bump down my last post (Zac Levi day can't last forever), here's 24 issues of CineMagic Magazine. CineMagic began as an independent 'zine in 1972 which gave filmmakers instructions on how to achieve special effects for movies. In 1979, Starlog bought the rights to the CineMagic name and began putting out their own version -- which was far more polished and accessible than the original. Although many of the techniques covered are now out of date, there's still a lot of timeless tips as well as info on how they achieved effects in many now-classic movies and TV shows and information on a variety of now-forgotten no-budget indies (like "An American Werewolf in High School!").

Included is issue #1 of the original 1972 'zine as well as issues #1-21 & 23-24 of the Starlog version. Not my scans; thanks to the original uploaders!

I'm Going Slightly MAD!

Tonight's the night that Cartoon Network premieres "Mad," a new series based on "Mad Magazine." This is the fourth attempt to transfer "Mad" to television. Last time around it was "Mad TV" which was, unfortunately, a pale imitation of its short-lived predecessor "Saturday Night Special" and the long-running "Saturday Night Live." And that was exactly the problem with "Mad TV" -- aside from the occasional animated "Spy Vs Spy" short, there wasn't a good connection with the comics; it was simply a sketch comedy show.

In 1973, ABC commissioned a pilot for a "Mad" series. Titled "The Mad Magazine TV Special," this pilot was everything that "Mad TV" wasn't: it was completely animated, it fairly accurately captured the essence of the comics, and it was often funny (the hospital sketch in particular is a hoot). Not to imply that it was truly great (and "The Oddfather" sketch drags on far too long), but it certainly had a lot of potential for greatness. Unfortunately the honchos at ABC didn't feel the same way, they deemed the show too risqué for television.

Writer Dick DeBartolo once noted, "Nobody wanted to sponsor a show that made fun of products that were advertised on TV, like car manufacturers" (the target of the opening skit). According to most sources the pilot never aired, but according to Wikipedia (we all know how accurate that can be) and the remembrances of others it ultimately aired in syndication (I once heard someone state "memory's an inexact science," and that's stuck with me) . I've done studious research and, although it was announced in '73 that it would air on ABC in during the '73/'74 season, I can't find any concrete proof that it ever aired on any network, in syndication or not (I couldn't find it in any newspaper listings and it's not cited in Vincent Terrace's "Encyclopedia of Television Series, Pilots and Specials," which is shockingly thorough, even with syndicated specials).

In 1987, Hanna-Barbera took another crack at bringing an animated "Mad" to TV. Cartoonist Scott Shaw mentioned the HB special was much worse than the '74 special, which probably explains why it's never seen the light of day. But, the internet being what it is, that's not to say that it'll never surface... like "The Mad Magazine TV Special" has! This is not my rip, I picked this up on a torrent. Many thanks to the original uploader, as well as the person who leaked it in the first place!

Carrie and More Fabulous Flops!

In 2006, BBC Radio launched a month-long series called "More Fabulous Flops," which highlighted the worst of musical theatre (this was a followup to a 2004 series that I don't have which was simply called "Fabulous Flops"). Each episode (humorously) chronicled a set of different shows, with remembrances by various cast/crew members. Huge thanks to whomever ripped and originally shared these (I snagged 'em from a private forum that's since closed). Here's an episode breakdown:

Episode 1
Original Airdate: February 5, 2006
Elaine Stritch tells all about Goldilocks, John Barr reveals the delights of Batboy, Eric Stern spills the beans on One Night Stand (which lasted, predictably, one night only), and Judy Kaye remembers the part she played in the Middle-Eastern comedy musical Oh Brother! They also seek out the creative team behind Bingo - The Musical. Will it prove to be the real home of genuine applause?

Episode 2
Original Airdate: February 12, 2006
We mourn the death of Annie 2: Miss Hannigan's Revenge, draw blood from Dance of the Vampires; Nichola McAuliffe spills the beans on Murderous Instincts; and we get details of a show called Rex about the life of Henry the VIII which costarred Glenn Close.

Episode 3
Original Airdate: February 19, 2006
God is the theme, including the cringeworthy In My Life, a show about a boy with Tourette's Syndrome in which God appears as a jingle writer. Disbelieve in Fire Angel, the god of comedy Ray Cooney's musical based on The Merchant of Venice; cover your ears at Wilde, DJ god Mike Read's flop that crashed and burned; and delight in our look at Stephen Sondheim, god of musicals, the genius composer who just can't get a hit on Broadway.

Episode 4
Original Airdate: February 26, 2006
We go Behind The Iron Mask, look at Legs Diamond and into then into the mind of Carrie with star Sally Ann Triplett (Sue Snell), who sings a few songs from the play.

Now back to "Carrie..." Most of these appeared on my Carrie site until I lost the domain with all the files (long, uninteresting story). I've had countless requests to re-up, but that site became an overwhelming nightmare (for reasons I won't go into), then I lost most of the files on a corrupt harddrive and couldn't find a way to transfer them off my Zune (thank you, Microsoft). Fortunately, however, I saved the harddrive and finally got around to rescuing these files. So without further ado...
