Circus Magazine - Rock Immortals #1

Today I'm venturing back to the 1960s and '70s, a simpler time when there was no phones, no lights, no motorcars, not a single luxury... Wait, that's not right. But there was no internet, cellphones, Britney Spears, tabloid news shows, reality TV (save for 12 episodes of "American Family"), eco-friendly hybrids, GPS tracking, CGI or asbestos removal...

...Everyone smoked cuz they didn't know better (and they looked cool!), pregnant woman indulged in pills and booze (which might help explain Generation X!), sex and drug use on TV was disallowed (just saying "Jane, you ignorant slut" on late night television was scandalous!) yet most TV writers seemed to be toking up (five words: The Brady Bunch Variety Hour!), ridiculously violent movies garnered G ratings (Planet of the Apes even has some nudity!), leisure suits and polyester fabrics were commonplace (and groovy!), Chaz Bono was female (and adorable!), kids actually went outside (childhood diabetes was unheard of!), and rock stars weren't merely the annoyingly faddish American Idols of the moment (*cough* adamlambert *cough*!), they were gods (but heaven forbid John Lennon openly liken himself to Christ!).

Which brings me to today's share. This 1980 special issue of Circus Magazine is devoted to those gods of rock, who were already legends. Included are Alice Cooper, David Bowie, The Beatles, Janis Joplin, Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne, Jim Morrison, The Doors, Led Zeppelin, Grace Slick, Jefferson Airplane, Cream, The Grateful Dead, Traffic, Jeff Beck, Deep Purple, Blue Oyster Cult, Grand Funk Railroad, The Who, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Marc Bolan, Elvis Presley, Elton John, and New York Dolls plus an article that features The Monkees, The Mamas and Papas, The Beach Boys, Herman's Hermits, Paul Revere and the Raiders, and more!

It would seem that I got lazy with these scans a little over halfway through the book -- and it's true. Scanning took over 6 hours and by the end I was aggravated that it was taking forever, so I began multitasking and paying less attention to the scanner than I should've. Some of the later scans of black and white pages are in all of their yellowing glory.

Wow, I used to read Circus back in the day, but I don't think I had this issue. It's great!!! It's filled with all the jugernauts of Rock: even the ads are great. Thanks a lot Vinnie!!

hey - speaking of the 70s, do you remember the commercial for water conservation where the little boy would make the speech that ended with "or there won't be any water left for me"?

damn, i wish i could find that..
